Jan. 2017 Member Spotlight – Susan B. Jones

Balancing a professional life with having a family can be difficult at times, but Susan B. Jones has found a way to do a job she loves and enjoy a personal life.  Susan B. Jones is an attorney at her own company, Susan B. Jones, Attorney at Law.  “I am a Family Law attorney and I have concentrated my practice in Family Law for over 22 years.  My clients seek assistance with divorce, custody matters, pre and post nuptial agreements, adoption, domestic violence, child support and guardianship matters.  I also serve as a Guardian ad Litem in Dependency, Neglect, Abuse Court in Fayette and Scott Counties.  At my office we strive to assist our clients through difficult times in a manner that will be the least stressful path down a sometimes troublesome road.  With the exception of far western Kentucky, I practice cases in most counties of Kentucky.  The majority of Family Law matters negotiate to settlement rather than proceed to a final contested hearing, thus the preferred method of resolution is to attempt mediation prior to trial when possible.”

What Susan likes best about her job is the opportunity to meet many interesting people in her practice.  “I have been fortunate to practice cases involving people in a wide variety of careers and with a vast array of life experiences.”

Some inspiring thoughts for other PWF members include the following: “As a sole proprietor I would encourage anyone who is seeking to own her own business to pursue that dream.  As a business owner and a mother I find that sole proprietorship is a great avenue toward achieving a balanced life.”

In her time off Susan practices Tai Chi and attends hot yoga and Pilates classes. “I have also recently returned to hiking and my daughter and I hiked Mount Baldy in November. (She made it to the summit, but I topped out at about 9,500 feet because I do not like the word ‘treacherous’ to describe a path.)  In addition I am in the process of winding up a horse farm that we have operated for 14 years.  My husband, Gabriel, is an architect at Sherman Carter Barnhart.  My daughter, Ashley, is heading to Colorado to pursue a career with Vail Resorts and my son, Austin, has partnered with a friend to develop a recording studio and pursue music production.”

“Prior to attending law school I obtained my Masters in counseling, and I find that my background as a mental health professional is beneficial to my work as a Family Law attorney.”
